چکیده

In a wireless LAN (WLAN) based on IEEE 802.11, supporting multiple classes of services with QoS constraints in MAC layer is very important. In this paper, we propose a class-based analytical model to support multiple traffic classes. Through investigating the relationship between access control parameters, such as contention window (CW) sizes and inter-frame space (IFS) under QoS constraints, we derive a mathematical model to characterize the MAC behavior. In particular, we present an optimal solution which maximizes the throughput while satisfying the QoS requirements. Simulation results demonstrate the accuracy of our proposed model. Keywords— Medium access control (MAC), wireless LAN (WLAN), IEEE 802.11, quality of service (QoS).

Performance Evaluation of Flows with Diverse Traffic and Transmission Rates in IEEE 802.11 WLAN

IEEE 802.11 WLAN cannot guarantee the QoS of applications, thus admission control has been proposed as an essential solution to enhance the QoS. Packet delay and throughput are commonly employed as assessment criterions to determine whether a new connection can be admitted into the WLAN. Considering the real network condition, the analytical model is presented in this paper, which is aimed to e...

Performance Evaluation of Real-Time Application for EDCA Function in IEEE 802.11e WLAN

The IEEE 802.11 standard is a widely used base for wireless local area network (WLAN) infrastructure, because of its easy deployment. But it cannot provide QoS support for an increasing number of multimedia applications. With deployment of WLAN, the ability of the IEEE802.11 standard to support multimedia applications with high quality of service (QoS) requirements has increased. This paper eva...

Comparison of QoS Guarantee Techniques for VoIP over IEEE802.11 Wireless LAN

An emerging killer application for enterprise wireless LANs (WLANs) is voice over IP (VoIP) telephony, which promises to greatly improve the reachability and mobility of enterprise telephony service at low cost. None of the commercial IEEE 802.11 WLAN-based VoIP products can support more than ten G.729-quality voice conversations over a single IEEE 802.11b channel on real-world WLANs, even thou...

A Modified MAC Behaviour for Multimedia Traffic in Wireless LAN for QoS Provisioning

IEEE 802.11 Wireless LAN (WLAN) developed as a simple and cost-effective wireless technology for best effort services, IEEE 802.11 has gained popularity at an unprecedented rate. However, it lacks of the capability to support Quality of Services (QoS) such as multimedia and real-time traffic properly. This paper presents a simple approach to enhance the multimedia real-time performance over the...

Resolving Collisions in IEEE 802.11 by means of Contention Window Reservation Scheduling

The random backoff contention window algorithm implemented in the IEEE 802.11 Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) provides a certain degree of collision mitigation. However, the issue of high collision rates within the IEEE 802.11 contention mode in a wireless local area network (WLAN) with high number of nodes is still not resolved. High packet collision rates result in throughput degradat...
